MILLDOWN® is a registered trademark of Kencryst Limited. Kencryst is a new company based on the scenic west coast of Scotland established in order to develop MILLDOWN® reduced sodium sea salt crystals. The founder of the Company has many years of experience with a number of well-known speciality food products in many markets around the world and has a particularly strong knowledge of the reduced sodium salt market. The other partners within the Company have strong production and development skills that have contributed to producing the product to the standard required and to meeting all nutritional and legislative requirements.
The Concept
The concept for the product started one night with a throw away comment made while cooking dinner, namely “why isn’t there a grinder version of a reduced sodium salt?”. The question came from someone who had recently switched to sea salt in the mistaken belief that it was reduced in sodium. When the user found that this was not the case, they asked what now appears to be a very obvious question. This started us on our quest to produce a reduced sodium sea salt for use in salt mills.
The Product
After much sampling we have identified the right mixture of ingredients to give the flavour of sea salt but with two thirds less sodium. We have tested the product to ensure all nutritional claims are true and accurate and we have sourced packaging that can be re-cycled and maintain the integrity of our reduced sodium salt. Our production process and facility have been audited to ensure we meet with all regulatory requirements and we are in the final stages of negotiation with a number of distributor partners.
Development
Once we became established with our reduced sodium salt we looked at ways of extending the range. Our driving philosophy is to allow consumers the choice of reducing their discretionary salt intake without sacrificing flavour. It is recommended that consumers use herbs and spices and we have now developed a range of spice mixes and also a unique new product using Hebridean Seaweed which offers the benefit of reduced sodium , great flavour and the benefits of seaweed. By combining popular herbs and spiceswith our great tasting salt our customers have further choices to reduce their discretionary salt intake even further.
Our Philosophy
As a customer focussed Company we enjoy a culture of "can do" and are looking to build sales of our products in our UK markets and also in many export markets. We are currently looking for partners to distribute our product. As sales grow we will know that we are benefiting many by helping them to reduce their discretionary sodium intake while still allowing the full flavour of sea salt to be enjoyed.
