Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I cut my salt intake?

The UK and many other governments recommend a maximum daily intake of 2.4g of sodium which is equivalent to 6g of salt. The average intake in the UK is around 9g of salt per day. A high salt diet is linked to a number of medical conditions such as high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease.

What is the difference between salt and sodium?

Salt is a combination of sodium and chloride. When you eat salt you are eating this combination of these two products. 100g of salt will be made up of approximately 39g of sodium and 61g of chloride. Reducing your salt intake really means reducing your sodium intake which you can do by switching to a low sodium salt. (To convert sodium to a salt equivalent a quick and approximate answer is to multiply it by two and a half).

How will using MILLDOWN® reduce my sodium intake?

MILLDOWN® is a mixture of potassium chloride and sodium chloride and contains two thirds less sodium than standard salts. Using MILLDOWN® salt crystals as a replacement for standard salt therefore reduces your overall sodium intake by two thirds without compromising anything on taste or experience.

Are rock and sea salts lower in sodium?

No, these salts are not lower in sodium. Switching from table salt to rock and sea salts will not have a significant impact on your discretionary salt intake

What is a reduced sodium salt?

A reduced sodium salt is one that has at least 25% less sodium than a standard salt. These products are available as fine powders which are usually a blend of sodium chloride and potassium chloride. MILLDOWN® is a reduced sodium salt that is available in a format suitable for grinders and offers a 66.7% reduction in sodium compared to standard, sea and rock salts.

Why do you not produce a product that is sodium free?

A product made only with potassium chloride would have a bitter metallic taste, nothing like the salt we’re used to. Some sodium chloride is required to maintain the flavour of salt we enjoy.

Why does MILLDOWN® taste the same as sea salt when it has potassium chloride as an ingredient?

The careful selection of a full flavour sea salt as a core ingredient results in a product tasting the same as sea salt but still offering two thirds less sodium.
